She studied acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and began her career with the British television series Just William (2010). Her breakout moment came in the year 2015 when she was cast in the lead role in Cinderella which was a film about fantasy. The actress previously appeared as the role of Lady Rose MacClare as part of the period drama Downton Abbey. James later played the role of the role of Countess Natasha Rostova as part of the adaptation of War & Peace (2016). James also appeared in several films, including Baby Driver (2017) and The Dig -2021. We Go Again (2018) and Yesterday 2019 We Go again (2018) and Yesterday 2019, Her performance as Pamela Anderson in the biographical show Pam & Tommy (2022) received nominations for the Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
